Scholar: how to take out spotlight, replace with widgets?

Hi:

My client wants to have sponsors' ads in place of the Spotlight section on the front page. I looked at the Theme Options but there doesn't seem to be an option to turn the spotlight on or off - have have to select a post category.

Here's the production site:

Further detail: where now you see a post about Boudoir, instead I want to have the same FEW Strategic Partners widget that you can see on this page:

Thanks!

best,
Terri

    Hey there, hope you are well.

    You can find in the file /bp-scholar/template-homepage.php

    <div id="front-sidebar">
    								<div class="h3-background">
    									<h3><?php _e( 'Spotlight', 'bp-scholar' ) ?></h3>
    								</div>
    								<?php query_posts('category_name='. $spotlight_category . '&showposts='. $spotlight_amount . ''); ?>
    												  <?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

    								<div class="content-box-inner">

    									<div class="entry">
    									<h4><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="<?php _e( 'Permanent Link to', 'bp-scholar' ) ?> <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h4>
    														<div class="entry-image-side">				<span class="attach-post-image" style="height:60px;width:170px;display:block;background:url('<?php the_post_image_url($spotlight_image_display); ?>') center center repeat">&nbsp;</span></div>																				<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
    																								<a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="<?php _e('permalink to', 'bp-scholar');?><?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php _e( 'Read more', 'bp-scholar' ) ?></a>
    																								<hr/>
    									</div>
    								</div>
    									<?php endwhile; ?>
    						</div>

    For the widget part, you will find the following useful:
