Set up a staging site?

Hello,

Just learned from Nastia in this thread https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/untangling-loginregistration-issues-for-my-membership-site#post-1203285 that my first step for transitioning my mulit-site membership blog from s2member to Membership 2 Pro would be to setup a staging site. I need to accomplish this as quickly as possible (the transition) and would appreciate as much help as I can get. Is there someone available to help me with this? I’ve found no easy answers here about even this first step and feel I could spend hours just trying to find out how to create a staging site.

Would love to give my credentials and get as much assistance as possible!

    Hey there lesley,

hope you’re doing good and thanks for reaching us!

Creating a staging environment is equal to creating a new WP installation in the same server, making it an exact copy of the live site.

This is really depending on your hosting provider and the exact server “package” you use, so I’d rather advise you to contact their support channel for more info about that. They may even help you build this in no time!

Having said that, there are hosting companies that provides staging environments as part of thier services, like WPEngine.

Finally, here’s couple of resources that covers this staging creation issue

    http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-create-staging-environment-for-a-wordpress-site/

    https://www.inboundnow.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-cloning-a-wordpress-site-from-one-url-to-another/

There’s also a plugin that seems to do the trick, I haven’t used it before though

    Warm regards,

    Dimitris

PS. Please keep in mind to have a backup copy of your live site somewhere safe before messing around with new sites, databases, or even with wp-staging plugin.

    Hello Dimitris,

And thank you for your response! I was just looking at Cloner when you wrote. Are you familiar with that? It is a WPMU plugin.

As I wrote in my question, I am looking for as much help in the doing as I can get here. My lovely web host can take care of much of this sort of thing for me, but an hourly wage that it challenging for me to afford. And she is not well-versed in multi-site or membership plugins. That is why I am here at WPMU Dev. And she doesn’t work on weekends and time is of the essence to me.

So…is backing up my site and installing the necessary plugin something you can do for me?

    Hey there lesley,

    hope you’re having a beautiful day!

And thank you for your response! I was just looking at Cloner when you wrote. Are you familiar with that? It is a WPMU plugin.

Cloner plugin can be used to clone main site or any subsite of your current multisite installation into a new subsite.

I really can’t tell if this kind of new subsite can be used for testing/debugging your other issues.

If a complete copy of the multisite installation should be deployed in another location/folder in your server having its own (sub)domain name and database, then Cloner can’t be a match here.

Deploying this staging site myself (or any other WPMUDEV support staff member) would surpass the scope of our support forums though. This would require some extended amount of time and we could see that more like “one-to-one dedicated support”, something that we don’t offer currently. https://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/using-wpmu-dev/support-vs-custom-development/

If you are not feeling comfortable proceeding on your own using the resources I shared with you, hiring a professional is the way to go. You may also advise our Jobs & Pros section about that.

    Take care,

    Dimitris
