Setting Up BP on My Site

Hey All,
I hope this message finds you guys well. I'm getting up to speed on bP but looking for a bit of a push in my next direction.
I have plugins all set up, here's what I'm looking to do (I'm using a non-bp theme, and have already installed the compatibility pack).

Looking to have a home page to the site, with some information and then a Log In area for people to register to become a member. Just can't figure out how to do that. I used a widget for Login Area, but it doesn't give me the options for "login" where someone can do the actual process of logging in.

Then...I'd like most of my pages to only be accessible to "members".

Can this be done? I assume so...any direction you can point me to that would be great. If you need any more information, please let me know.

Do I need to set anything up on my server? I installed the forums plugin, and it said that I am all set.

What are Shortcodes, and what are they used for? Are they related?

Thanks...I appreciate any time someone can give,
David

    Hiya David,

Lots of good questions here, let's take a look:

(I'm using a non-bp theme, and have already installed the compatibility pack).

Just FYI, we've received a lot of feedback with users having issues with this method. In general, best practice would be to use a theme that is built to handle BuddyPress functions. If this works for you, then great, but we know people are having trouble with this.

If you're looking for some great BP themes, we have a site that shows them all off quite nicely (and then you can download any of them from here). Many of these have the login feature built in for you.

I used a widget for Login Area, but it doesn't give me the options for "login" where someone can do the actual process of logging in.

Do you have a link to the widget/plugin you're using for this or is it part of your theme? BuddyPress uses a different login page than normal WordPress so it may not be compatible. This is where a theme written for BuddyPress can really help.

I'd like most of my pages to only be accessible to "members".

The next version of BuddyPress should include this by default - or offer it as a plugin.
For now we have a couple options for you. Check out our plugin for additional site privacy options:

There's also our membership plugin of course (which works with buddypress)
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/membership

Also, Tammie has a tutorial on making anything on your site visible to only logged in members:

Do I need to set anything up on my server? I installed the forums plugin, and it said that I am all set.

That's it. You should be good to go!

What are Shortcodes, and what are they used for? Are they related?

Shortcodes are pretty awesome and used in a lot of ways within WordPress. Here's a good page for reference on these:

Hope this helps. Let us know how you're getting along with it!

    Thanks!

Wow...thank you so very much...I have homework to do. I hear you about the themes, but the guy I'm doing the site is adamant about using his theme: http://colorlabsproject.com/themes/arthemia-premium/

Since writing this, I installed the following plugin (sorry, I wrote widget, this is a plugin) http://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-sliding-login-panel

When you say the next version of buddypress, how often does that get released?

I will check out the plugins and Tammie's information as well as the shortcode.

Lastly...I noticed in my admin area that there are some areas for Menu rules yes and or No. Some of the Super Admin and Premium page options have an error message that says " Not available with this version" Do I get this because of my theme?

I appreciate your help and suggestions...

    Hiya!

Glad some of that info was helpful!

That plugin is great. Several members here have used it. We like it so much we even built it into our latest theme:

When you say the next version of buddypress, how often does that get released?

Not sure exactly on this one, but here's a link to the update on privacy settings:
The developer has said he'll be showing it off on November 8, 2010

Lastly...I noticed in my admin area that there are some areas for Menu rules yes and or No. Some of the Super Admin and Premium page options have an error message that says " Not available with this version" Do I get this because of my theme?

Not sure, but my guess would be yes. If you post a screenshot I can see better what you're referring to.

    Thanks!
