Shipper - Questions & Feedback

First, thank you! I had to switch hosting last night and Shipper saved me from the anticipated headache of having to transfer all of my files.

I've only had a few bumps with getting things operational ( images weren't loading to the media library though the files had migrated, needed to turn off and back on a few plugins to have them behave) This was much better than insanity I was expecting this weekend to be.

Now, questions:

I'm creating my staging site on the new hosting tonight using Shipper as well, but in both of these cases the migration was several thousand files. I'm yet to see how just push a site to active/update an active site's files. Is this possible? If, so what is the method for this? or do we have to migrate the entire site to push to active?

    Hello Enduring Epilepsy (Katrina),

I'm yet to see how just push a site to active/update an active site's files. Is this possible? If, so what is the method for this? or do we have to migrate the entire site to push to active?

Shipper can be used for creating staging sites, however, since it was designed to do migration it will always migrate the whole site. There is no option to just move changed files. It's all or nothing.
In cases like yours when you need to push changes from staging to live site it's better to use staging functions that your hosting provider offers.
Shipper is good for creating staging sites that are used for debugging issues (like performing plugin conflict test) because it's done once to see where the problem is and then there is no need to push back to live.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

This needs cleared up/explained better on your site then. Looking at the page for Shipper plugin, it mentions: Push from local to live, File find and replace

This seems to indicate pushing changes made on a staging site to live, being able to replace individual files. If it's able to push only full migration, this needs clarified.

I just moved to Bluehost and they don't seem to have a means of pushing from stage to live either. Is there another plugin that you would recommend I use for the time being?

** It would be very nice if Shipper had this feature in the future.

    Thank for the help.

    Hi Enduring Epilepsy (Katrina)

    Hope you are doing well,

Indeed, the shipper can send the site to live, but it will copy the entire website/database from local to live. As most of the migrations plugin will only replace the whole WordPress/ Databases.

I see some members using the all in one wp migration for a similar task.
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-migration/

Creating an export file from local and importing to live, but as told before it will replace the entire WordPress/Database.

I do like the manual changes, using FileZilla to upload the new CSS or PHP function, if this is a plugin, test on local site then install and configure on live site for not replace the entire database.

The correct way to control your files and move what you need is using Git control. You can learn more about it on the links:

The Shipper plugin is a really young plugin, and I will pass this idea to shipper team, hope we can implement some new nice features.

Let us know if you need any further help on this,
