SimpleIntranet & LDAP/SOO/Active directory, how to get started?

Hello all,

Writing because I'm using a plugin called "SImpleIntranet" which seems pretty awesome - gives me a fullo user directory with bios etc of sample users installed via BuddyPress

Q: I understand that theoretically it should be possible for me, in some manner, to:

- Import users from active directory
- set up LDAP authentication & SSO

...however the bulk of my experience as a developer is in design & coding, the entrie world of LDAP/Active Directory/SSO is completely alien to me, I don't even really understand yet what the pieces are or how they are meant to fit together

Which means that I can get help from my company's IT dept, but first I have to explain to them what steps I need them to take, but first I need to understand what it is i am actually going to try to ask them to assist me with

Can anyone give me a quick ryundown on what the typical steps would be to connect a site via an LDAP SSO plugin and import an active directory userbase?

Can be plugin agnostic, though obviously if anyone has any experience doing this with SImpleIntranet that would be especially helpful

the simpleintranet site recommends the plugin simple-ldap-login.1.5.5.zip as a first step, i installed and entered the dummy user recommended by our it dept in order to test, but that just gave me a white screen on the wp-login page and im not familiar enough with thsi process to even have an educated guess as to what might have gone wrong, because i dont understand what simple-ldap-login.1.5.5.zip does - the picture in my mind of the connections that would take place were this to have been successful are somewhat vague

thx in advance

alex

    Hey there,

    ...however the bulk of my experience as a developer is in design & coding, the entrie world of LDAP/Active Directory/SSO is completely alien to me, I don't even really understand yet what the pieces are or how they are meant to fit together

    Wow, this is pretty specialised and not really WordPress. I think our help here might unfortunately be limited by our experience with LDAP/Active D, but we'll certainly try to help. :slight_smile:

    Looking at the Simple Intranet plugin they support Active Directory, or atleast they link to here:

    http://www.simpleintranet.org/simple-intranet-active-directory/

    Which in turn links here:

    http://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-ldap-login/

    And one of the features state they support Active Directory.

    I know you mentioned you've seen this plugin, and you get a white screen.

    If this can work the question is do you need to move from Active Directory to something like OpenLDAP?

    With the white screen can you please check your servers error logs to see what was causing it. You should get some kind of error.

    Perhaps you don't have the PHP modules for LDAP enabled?

    To output the WordPress debugging information you can open your wp-config.php file and change:

    define('WP_DEBUG', false);

    To:

    define('WP_DEBUG', true);

    You can also have these errors output to a debug.log file located in your /wp-content/ folder, to do this add the following to your wp-config.php file:

    define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true);

    Using WP_DEBUG would put the errors on the site, you can hide those and just have them out put the WP_DEBUG_LOG (if set to true) by using this as well:

    define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);

    Let me know what you find.

    Take care.

Thank NAME, for their help.
