Slider and Carousel

Hello WPMU Dev Support,

I am using Marketpress with your FrameMarket and Gridmarket frame and child themes.

All is good but things are proving a little bit too limiting for displaying products. What I need is:

1) Slider for featured products to be on the front page
2) Carousel for popular products to be on the front page

Only solution I can think of is using Slider and Carousel plugins that provide:
1) Shortcodes that can be placed on a page
2) Cater for Custom Products, Product Categories and Product Tags

Can you suggest plugins that work best with Marketpress plugin and Gridmarket theme that can do this?

OR

Dou you have another suggestion to get Slider and Carousel functionality?

Kind regards,
Yusef

    Hey Yusef.

MarketPress uses a custom Post Type. So its like a post or a page, except in this instance the Post Type is Product.

Here is an article I found which should give you some insight into how to integrate the Nivo slider:

    http://www.wpexplorer.com/nivoslider-wordpress

    http://www.pathorsley.com/code/setting-up-a-homepage-slider-with-wordpress-custom-post-types-and-jquery-cycle/

    This plugin:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/promotion-slider/

    States:

Ability to display only a certain post type

Maybe that might work, worth a try?

This one also mentions Custom Post Types:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/easy-nivo-slider/

Hopefully some of that should help you out.

Let me know how you get on.

    Take care.

    Hi Timothy,

I am getting use to WPMU Dev expecting the customer to be OK with coding, which fortunately I am very comfortable with, so the content of your reply was expected.

Before I sumarise how I got on I should state the objective is to produce a shopping basket website using Wordpress that that will match a Magento website, this is no easy task.

With regards to what you have suggested:
    1) The free plugin Easy Nivo Slider does not work and until the developer resolves the basic issues I ran into has no hope of meeting reliability requirements and would result in my customers constantly sending me support requests.

    2) The Promotion Slider is far more interesting and there is the option for paid support, which is critical for a commercial website, especially as I do not want to get into code I have not written.
Big issue here is the extra coding I would have to do to get it to accept custom post types.

Both plugins would require me to provide too much support to my customers website.

Getting back to producing a Magento website using Wordpress, here is the best option I have been able to find so far:
    1) Use Marketpress plugin with FrameMarket/GridPress theme
    2) The two critical functions that are missing to get this option over the Magento line is
    - Slider
    - Carousel
    3) For Slider, by far the best option is iThemes Featured Post, this automatically picks up custom post types and gives a wide variety of ways to display them. As it supports shortcodes then can be used with GridPress theme
    4) For Carousel I am still searching, iThemes Carousel does not have a filter to select custom-post types.

You can see the latest status of my experiments on http://www.flout.co

On http://www.sort.co I used the iThemes Builder framework with the MarketPress plugin, there has been a clash in code and the plugin does not operate as expected hence the move the FrameMarket theme. I was very unhappy about the MarketPress plugin not working with the Builder theme.

WPMU Dev have made a great combination of MarketPress plugin and FrameMarket theme, the following further functionality is rquired:

    1) More child themes for FrameMarket
    2) Slider
    3) Carousel
    4) Breadcrumb, easy one to resolve
    5) A shopping cart widget which shows total items in basket and total amount with a basket logo that can be put on the sidebars or header throughout a website

The above is my personal view, seems to me with a little more development WPMU Dev can get pass the Magento line.

Putting all the above to one side, the short answer to your question, iThemes Featured Post slider works superbly with MarketPress and Framemarket/GridPress, you can see it on http://www.flout.co

Will be posting more support requests as there are a few more technical issues I need to resolve.

    Kind regards,
    Yusef

    Hey again.

I am getting use to WPMU Dev expecting the customer to be OK with coding, which fortunately I am very comfortable with, so the content of your reply was expected.

Well if the customer wants something custom which is not part of the project, then they would need to either code it themselves or hire a developer.

We do developer the most popular requests, but it is impossible to develop absolutely everything which every member wants.

Before I sumarise how I got on I should state the objective is to produce a shopping basket website using Wordpress that that will match a Magento website, this is no easy task.

Ya Magento is huge, its real cool as well but very complex. I've enjoyed using it a good few times in the past.

You can see the latest status of my experiments on http://www.flout.co

That looks real smart, I see the sliders are coming along.

I was very unhappy about the MarketPress plugin not working with the Builder theme.

MarketPress uses a custom Post Type and WP standards. What was the issue there with the theme not working with MarketPress? Was it a JS issue or something else?

    1) More child themes for FrameMarket
    2) Slider
    3) Carousel
    4) Breadcrumb, easy one to resolve
    5) A shopping cart widget which shows total items in basket and total amount with a basket logo that can be put on the sidebars or header throughout a website

Sure they would make excellent additions. In fact lets get this thread over to the feature request forums for that. Anyone else looking for these? Add your support if so.

Another plugin which supports custom post types and might work:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/smooth-slider/

    and:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dynamic-content-gallery-plugin/screenshots/

    Thanks.
