SSL and Domain Mapping with multisite

I have multisite installed with subdirectories, and the domain mapping plugin. I am trying to install a Standard SSL certificate to cover all the sites on my multi-site network. However, everytime I follow the directions on your article "How to Use One SSL Certificate for Your Entire Multisite Network", I get a failure message.

I have done nothing but pay for the SSL on Godaddy and have it assigned to the site. Do I need to download and install the SSL onto my wordpress install prior to following the directions about the domain mapping procedure?

Please help!

Thanks,

BigVan

    Hello BigVan,

Do I need to download and install the SSL onto my wordpress install prior to following the directions about the domain mapping procedure?

Yes, this is what you need to do now. Domain Mapping will use that SSL certificate, and will force whole network to be https, but certificate itself needs to be installed for site.
You are probably using cPanel so you need to follow those instructions https://pk.godaddy.com/help/cpanelwhm-install-a-certificate-5240 to install SSL ceritficate.

Let me know if you have more questions.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

I have now installed the SSL on my primary domain, but one of the sites that I am domain mapping will not keep the "https://" activated when I toggle to it. The main site shows https but not the subsite.

    Please advise?

    Hello Big Van

If you have normal SSL certificate, the this certificate will work for main domain, and for other sites if your network in sub-directory based.

To use the same SSL certificate across all subsites in a subdomain based network, you will need wildcard SSL certificate.

To use the same SSL certificate for all mapped domain as well as the main domain, then you will need a Multi Domain SSL certificate.

So, would you please make sure you have correct type of SSL certificate? I am not quite sure if you want to use SSL certificate in your subsite URL or mapped domain URL.

    Have a good day!

    Cheers
    Ash
