SSL and multisite with mapped Domains - How do I configure to secure primary domain only

I have an ssl on my primary. when I use multisite switcher I get the expected security warning to naviage to the back end for the various sites on my server. They are all mapped to primary http domains, and they work fine as far as people visiting them. The problem that I am running into are the media libraries do not show the thumbnails of the items in the media library.

Do I need a wildcard for all of these sub domains in order to correct this issue? Can a mod to the wp-config be made to address this issue?

    Hi Thomas,

Thanks for asking, but I'm confused at some point. Can you please help me in understanding those?

I have an ssl on my primary

Did you mean you have SSL Certificate installed for the main site on your network?

when I use multisite switcher I get the expected security warning to naviage to the back end for the various sites on my server

By referring to "Multisite Switcher", do you mean when you go to your sub-sites? Do you mean you get SSL not available warning when you try to access the sub-site Dashboard for different subsites? Can you please explain in details so I can get exact idea regarding the situation?

They are all mapped to primary http domains

Do you mean your subsites are mapped to Top Level Domains like "www.example.com" ?

The problem that I am running into are the media libraries do not show the thumbnails of the items in the media library

Are you facing this problem in your main site Media Library or Subsite Media Libraries?

Actually, I could tell you better about the issue if I could see it live, check your current configuration and make some tests on your site. Would you mind allowing Support Access so we can have a closer look at this?

To enable support access you can follow this guide here:
    http://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/wpmu-dev-dashboard-enabling-staff-login/

I'm looking forward to hear from you and resolve this issue as soon as possible.

    Have a nice day. Cheers!

I have an ssl on my primary
Did you mean you have SSL Certificate installed for the main site on your network?

Yes, I have an ssl that is installed on the primary domain https://hattiesburgpatriot.com . It is a single domain certificate. All other domains on the network are mapped to their respective subdomains and do not need SSL feature at this time.

when I use multisite switcher I get the expected security warning to naviage to the back end for the various sites on my server
By referring to "Multisite Switcher", do you mean when you go to your sub-sites? Do you mean you get SSL not available warning when you try to access the sub-site Dashboard for different subsites? Can you please explain in details so I can get exact idea regarding the situation?

When Logged into the site's backend and initially navigating to a subsite dashboard, one will get the security warning since the ssl is not a wildcard. That is acceptable to me at this time, but I would rather have all subsite dashboards to be http, and eliminate this issue. I am not sure how to configure this in htaccess or wp-config to resolve this issue of forcing subsite backend to default to https.

They are all mapped to primary http domains
Do you mean your subsites are mapped to Top Level Domains like "www.example.com" ?
Yes, correct. For example, life.hattiesburgpatriot.com is mapped to http://HattiesburgLife.com

The problem that I am running into are the media libraries do not show the thumbnails of the items in the media library
Are you facing this problem in your main site Media Library or Subsite Media Libraries?

This problem does not exist on my main, primary domain. Only on the subsites media

Actually, I could tell you better about the issue if I could see it live, check your current configuration and make some tests on your site. Would you mind allowing Support Access so we can have a closer look at this?

    Support access is already granted.

    Hi Thomas,

Hope you are doing good today.

Thank you for explaining the issue, and your website configuration, it seems like the issue is related to this thread: https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/multisite-media-library-only-shows-thumbnails-for-main-site#post-1161035

Could you please try the following rules mentioned in the above thread, in your .htaccess, and check whether it helps? This should help us in ruling out whether the issue of images not being displayed in your media library, is due to the http/https protocol, or not. And hence we can give a closer attention to this issue.

Please let us know how that goes, so that we could give a help get this sorted. Have a nice day.

    Kind Regards,
    Nithin
