Starting from scratch - Complete re-launch of website.

Hi.

I´ve decided to replace my current theme with a new and improved version of it. One of the reasons being my ideas and vision has outgrown the capacity of it.

Having spent time in the sandbox with my toy digger, learning the basics while having fun, I feel it´s about time I invest in a real digger, move out to the construction yard and build something real.

I´d like to keep this to myself, however. Meaning, I don´t want Google to poke around and index my new stuff before my construction is complete.

a) How do I prevent Google /search engines from dropping by?

b) How do I remove the old website completely from Google while at it?

    Hey there Dee

    a. If you're developing it in a staging area that's online you could protect it by simply blocking all access except your IP address. You'd add something like this to the bottom of your htaccess file:

    order deny,allow
    deny from all
    allow from 8.8.8.8
    allow from 192.168.1.12

Replace the 8.8.8.8 with your own IP address. If you don't need the second allow, remove it. If you do, change the IP address on that too. If you need a third IP address to see the site, add another "allow from"

Another option might be a coming soon or down for maintenance type plugin:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/ultimate-coming-soon-page/
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/coming-soon/

There are a fair few out there, so you could take a look around if those two don't cut it.

Both of these would stop any search engine from indexing content.

    b. You don't want this to be seen at all?

Will you want to retain the content at all?

If it's totally not needed, remove all the files, remove the DB, install a fresh copy of WP and do as I mentioned above in a. If you want to keep the site, or an archive of it, don't delete it all.

    Does this help?

Let me know if you need anything else.

    Timothy! Thanks for reaching out.

I used a plugin that reset my WP database, and installed the ultimate-coming-soon-page plugin. Worked like a charm. I´ve understood you correctly that Google and other SE´s will not be able to index the site before I launch the full version?

I´m also wondering how I can go about removing all the old indexed content on Google. I read some on Google Webmaster Tools - but I´m not too savvy with the terms and how to´s there.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey Dee,

The idea behind these plugins is usually to stick up a curtain, hiding the content and site behind it whilst you work on it. So it shouldn't make the content available. Best way to test is try loading some direct urls whilst logged out, being logged in as admin you should see the site otherwise.

I´m also wondering how I can go about removing all the old indexed content on Google. I read some on Google Webmaster Tools - but I´m not too savvy with the terms and how to´s there.

Personally I'd just leave it, Google will see it's not there and just stop indexing naturally. A painful process could be to manually do that from here:

    Hopefully they should help.

    Take care.
