Subsite in subdomain multisite gives 404 suddenly

I have a subdomain multisite. The Subsite in subdomain multisite gives 404 suddenly.

Can you help me figure out what the issue is here?

    Hi Brandon,

Hope you are doing good today.

I gave a closer look at the dashboard side and could notice the issue. However, I created a new subsite called wpmudevtest, and it doesn’t seem to work out of the box when loading the website.

    I’m getting the following error:

Seems like you are manually creating add-ons for subsite? Adding WildCard Subdomain should ensure the newly created subsites load out of the box:

Regarding the 404 error when loading the subsite /wp-admin dashboard is more related to the server side. I could notice the same issue with every subsite.

Do you have WildCard SSL certificate installed for the website? I could notice all the subsite dashboard are redirected to https link and is loading an SSL issue:

I’m not able to find where exactly the https redirect is added. Could you please temporarily remove the redirect to https, and see whether the website loads fine?

Such an issue is common if there is an issue once the SSL is added too. Would recommend you to check whether the dashboard loads fine with http link too,ie by disabling the redirect to https, or SSL, so that it would give a better idea where the issue is located.

Please do let us know how that goes. Have a nice day ahead.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi, Nithin!

So, addressing your response step-by-step, I'll start first with your comments on manually creating Add-Ons for Subsites:

With our current hosting setup, it appears we have to use cPanel to manually create Add-On domains for domains being mapped through our multisite, even though we do have an A record for the wildcard subdomain (more on that next). I tested this on a domain and subsite we have on our network, I deleted this domain from our Add-On domains in cPanel, and the site began redirecting to a cPanel generated error page. I've attached a screenshot of the page.

Additionally, I've found that it is necessary to use the client dashboard area of Hostwinds to add A records for each subdomain that our network site uses for its subsites. While working through your feedback from your last response, I tested whether we needed those A records by deleting them from our Hostwinds dashboard. After a short time passed for DNS propagation, the subsites' subdomains I tested stopped routing to the subsites and began pointing to browser error pages. I've attached a screenshot of the error page.

In regards to the wildcard subdomain:

With our hosting provider, Hostwinds, I am currently unable to add A records through cPanel. Instead, I have to add DNS records through Hostwinds' client area. For our network's site domain,, I do have an A record added for the wildcard subdomain * through the client area dashboard for the hosting provider, although, looking at the Zone Editor on our cPanel, I do not see the A record for the wildcard. I've attached a screenshot of the error message that cPanel displayed when I tried to use Zone Editor to add an A record for the wildcard subdomain.

If it would be helpful, I can send you a private message with our login credentials to both our cPanel and hosting dashboard. For now, I will use cPanel to manually add back the Add-On domains for our subsites; I will also use our hosting dashboard to add the A records back for the subsite's subdomains that I had tested/deleted.

    Hello Brandon

Yeah it would be better if send us the cPanel and site admin login info, so that we can check.

You can send me privately in the following format:

    1. Please go to

    2. Select “I have a different question” if not selected

    3. In subject line put “Attn-Ashok” (this will ensure that the email is assigned to me)

    4. Provide the wanted details.

    5. Add the thread link in the message so that I can track.

    Have a nice day!
