Theme interaction with rtMedia - some layout issues

I'm pretty sure one of these issues is rtMedia's problem, and I've posted there first, but I'd like to run these two by this forum just in case.

First issue:

When I select an image I'd like this div to accommodate the preview.

Second issue: and I'm pretty sure this is rtMedia...

Getting some weird unclosed HTML and I cannot find it anywhere in rtMedia files.

If anyone's used this plugin before or seen similar or has some pointers, I'd be very much obliged. to see it in person.

    i am sure your issues may indeed require some css or even html adjustments as you mentioned.
    but for the first question,
    "this div to accommodate the preview."
    you mean not as a lightbox /popup Facebook style ?
    possibly try switching off that feature in rtmedia display settings ?
    also try switching off their default css styles and see if these help.
    the point is try the rtmedia various settings offered in the plugin before interfering with themes html/css etc.
    just a few suggestions :slight_smile:

    Thanks for these pointers

    You asked "you mean not as a lightbox /popup Facebook style ?" and no, that's not what I mean. The problem is that when I click to upload an image, then select an image, the div containing the activity box should now show a preview of the image to be uplaoded, but I'm getting scrollbars.

    I disabled rt CSS as you suggested, it went from bad to worse, now scrollbars are in the div before I click the upload button.

    Hey there @jaz_michael_king

    Welcome to WPMU DEV, glad to have you aboard!

    And thanks to @amused for taking this one by the horns and trying :slight_smile:

    For the rtmedia image preview, that is most certainly a theme CSS issue as it looks just dandy on my pet project (screenshot). But, as it is a theme issue and we need to be logged in to see it, can you please grant support access from your WPMU DEV Dashboard under the Support tab?

    Should I still be holding the support access open?

    I've left both themes available, the rtMedia preview and media gallery both work fine in the BuddySocial theme, it's BuddyPress Community that's breaking, I'd love to figure it out as it is very much superior to BuddyPress Social for my needs.

    Best example of the profile template breaking is to load in both themes.

    However, upload in activity stream is also breaking on BuddyPress Community, perfectly fine in the BuddyPress Social.

    Hey Jaz,

    Apologies for the delays here. Patrick has been taking some personal time off and looks like we missed re-assigning this one :slight_frown:

    Could you re-grant support access again then I can have a look :slight_smile:

    Keep in mind that are legacy themes are no longer receiving updates as earlier this year we released our new Upfront framework, which you can check out here:

    With that said, I'm still happy to have a look at resolving this issue.

    Look forward to hearing back!

    All the best,

    Hey, no worries, I know how it goes sometimes :o)

    Access re-granted, I understand on the legacy note, I _think_ this might be a pretty quick fix and I'm really not trying to extend or alter this, it's exactly what I'm looking for out of the box but I cannot figure out what exactly is throwing it off. I can jump on a chat or something if it's not clear how to see the thing breaking. Many thanks!

    I'll check into Upfront as well, maybe I can cobble something similar together out of that.

    I'm going to dump rtMedia's activity plugin for the WPMUDEV Activity plus. By doing so I lose comments on the full view, and a media library for each member by doing this, and the WPMUDEV plugin consumes much more screen real estate but I cannot figure out what is breaking thertMedia plugin in this theme. rtMedia plugin does not break in other templates, only this one.

    Hey Jaz,

    Sorry again for the delay. I know you mentioned you've gone to our Activity Plus plugin now but just want to let you know that I tested rtmedia out with the BP Community theme on my own site and I was unable to find that extra closing tag; however, we can hide the title there as it's not really needed anyway.

    I also have some CSS to increase the height of the preview box too:

    .type-bp_members .post-title, .type-bp_members .post-author {
      display: none;
    #whats-new-content > div {
      height: auto !important;

    So if you do decide to try out rtmedia again then add that CSS to your custom stylesheet. If you don't have a custom stylesheet already then use this plugin:

    Hope that helps!

    Hey Scott,

    We've completely discontinued the legacy themes now including BP Comunity; however, if you are still wanting to use it - the above CSS should work as nothing changed in the theme.

    Keep in mind, that there could be issues with it as BP is continually updated since the legacy themes are no longer being updated alongside it.

    We did just release Upfront 1.0, however if you are using BuddyPress then I would hold off until 1.2/1.3 which is when we plan to roll out the compatibility layer and then it will fully support BuddyPress and many other major plugins - plus it will be much easier for developers to integrate their plugins with Upfront.

    If you have any further questions just let us know.
