Theme not working on some micro sites

I am running BuddyPress 1.2.7 on WP 3.0.5.

I have created templates with New Blog Templates. My micro sites are using the Product theme (actually my child of the Product theme). Some of them work and others do not and I cannot figure out why.

Broken:

Please advise.

    Hello UNIIMI,

That definitely is strange. Could you let us know the following to start with?

    Are these all different templates?

Have any of them been edited after the initial site creation?

Perhaps we could start with just one and progress from there. Could you possibly create a single test site off one of the templates that isn’t working properly and we’ll see what might be going awry with that one?

    Cheers,

    David

It looks like the problem is actually happening with sites that were created before I installed New Blog Templates. These sites had other themes activated and when I switched them over to Product, Product did not work.

Yes, I created the template after the Product theme was activated but I am not having problems with the template. It’s the sites that were created before I activated New Blog Templates that are not working. The sites created with the template are working fine.

Ah, I seem to have misunderstood. However, these site (the trouble ones), they were all setup initially using other themes, correct? Have they yet been setup to work with Product (ie. setting up the Product options)? The slider configuration and content, the custom menus?

Or are you unable to access those options maybe?

    Cheers,

    David

I am able to access those options and I have set those options and still I get the message on homepage “Please set either your slideshow up or content or both under admin, appearance and theme options.

You will also want to go to theme options and preset styles to set the theme styles this is the default minimal style there are other fancier ones with a range of effects.”

Hmm, have you tried deactivating New Blog Templates and seeing if the options on those sites can then be set properly? Or perhaps deactivating other plugins? My first inclination is that there’s a plugin conflict causing it not to save the options.

    Cheers,

    David

I have a plugin on all blogs that use the Product theme which creates two new UI pages meant to streamline the theme options process.

The plugin works on all blogs created with New Blog Templates using the previous version of Product.

I deactivated the plugin on this blog and this blog still does not work: http://uniimi.com/releaseme/

You can see the plugin in action on this blog where it works perfectly: http://uniimi.com/producttest/theme-options/

I do not know why the plugin doesn’t work with the new update of Product. I have contacted the plugin developer. However, I do not believe the plugin is causing the original issue.

    Hiya UNIIMI,

Can we come back a step – what do you mean by not working? I just went to each of the ‘broken’ sites and they’re showing up for me. I realize some of them no longer use the product theme, but I’m not clear on what the problem is exactly.

If you can clarify a bit more we can look into it. I have a feeling it’s more to do with the WordPress setup than the Product theme or New Blog Template plugin, but we’ll take a look with ya.

    thanks!

By not working I mean that the users have entered info on the theme options page and instead of seeing their slides they see this:

Please set either your slideshow up or content or both under admin, appearance and theme options.

You will also want to go to theme options and preset styles to set the theme styles this is the default minimal style there are other fancier ones with a range of effects.

    For this site: http://uniimi.com/hminn037/

I have deactivated my plugin, clicked the orange button labeled "Reset All Options," and entered the settings seen in the attached screen shots.

Still, visiting the site you will see the following:

Please set either your slideshow up or content or both under admin, appearance and theme options.

You will also want to go to theme options and preset styles to set the theme styles this is the default minimal style there are other fancier ones with a range of effects.

    Am I doing something wrong?

Hi UNIIMI, have you tried deactivating New Blog Templates momentarily? You mentioned having disabled the other plugin but what about New Blog Templates? Also, is Product the only theme that’s being affected by this all, as far as you can see?

  • UNIIMI
    • The Incredible Code Injector

Well, the blogs that are displaying this message were not created with New Blog Templates. They are blogs that were created before I activated New Blog Templates.

There are only a few blogs on my site that use other themes. None of them are having issues.

Hi UNIIMI, thanks for all your patience! I’m gonna have to call in the big guns again but while waiting for them to arrive, would you mind letting us know the following…

Are all of the sites (functional and non-functional) using child themes of Product?

Have you tried deactivating New Blog Templates momentarily to see if the theme options are able to be saved with it deactivated?

    Thanks,

    David

    Hiya Uniimi,

I can’t think of anything that would cause the issue here – at this point it may be easiest to simply delete all the entries in the database for this theme and start again.

got to wp_#_options table and delete anything with an option name that starts with ‘dev_product’

(where # is the Blog Id of any of the sites with the issue)

You may find up to 72 entries in each table.

Delete them then go into the blog admin and resave the theme options. Let us know if this helps at all.

    Thanks!

    Hiya UNIIMI,

All the broken sites are ones that were created before you began using New Blog Templates and the Product theme. Is that correct?

If so, the previous theme or a previous plugin has left something in the database which is conflicting with the new plugin/theme combination. You’ve already tried completely removing the product options (yeah, there are a lot of them) to no affect. That means it has to be something other than the Product theme.

I’d guess one of the previously active plugins or themes didn’t completely uninstall itself when deactivated. The only way to track down which was the culprit would be to go through the database and look for anything left over by plugins/themes that are no longer active, or to recreate the old scenario from the beginning and see what combination of plugins/themes breaks the site.

Obviously, the above steps are rather involved. You could also simply make export files for each of the three sites above, then delete them, recreate new sites, and import the posts/pages into the new ones. That may be easier at this point.

    Thanks!

Just wanted to let you all know that I finally updated to the most recent version of Product Theme today and am having no problems with my custom plugin. Yay!

I don’t know why my plugin wasn’t working with whatever version I was trying to update to back in March (must have either been 2.2.6 or 2.2.7) but it’s working perfectly with 2.3.2 just like it did with 2.2.5! Yay!

I take it back. Updating did cause a *new* problem. I was able to figure it out and re-code my plugin though (thankfully).

You used to code the Feature Blocks (or Content Blocks) as dev_product_feature_block…. etc and now you code them as dev_product_block…

Thank NAME, for their help.

Let NAME know exactly why they deserved these points.

Gift a custom amount of points.
