thumbnails not appearing in subdomain media dashboard

Franciscan.io - dev site for Franciscan.edu
I was working with Abdul Wajed but was disconnected from the Chat, not sure how to followup. I already initiated support access for him.

The issue is that my media library does not appear correctly (see attached). When i click on one of the blank squares, I see some image meta content, but no image appears unless I click "Edit" (also attached screenshot). When i upload an image through "Featured Image" for a post, the image will sometimes appear immediately on the list view of a post, but in all other instances the images don't appear on the site for at least a few days (note absent logos on subdomain sites except for "Events..." network site.
Note: I still get this error when I disable all plugins and switch to twenty nineteen theme.

Please check chat notes for more info.

    Hello Brian

Does it happen on the live site too? I can see the issue on the test site you mentioned.

For example, the direct link of the images shows redirect error:
    https://testschool.franciscan.io/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2019/02/Banner32-150x150.jpg
    https://spt.franciscan.io/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/2dc14c21-l5a7189-1-150x150.jpg

It may happen due to plugin conflict. Would you please run a conflict test? Please deactivate all plugins except this one and check if the problem gone. If so, then enable all plugins one by one and find which one is having conflict. You need to do the same with themes as well.

You can find the flowchart here: https://premium.wpmudev.org/docs/getting-started/getting-support/#chapter-1

Also check the htaccess if it has default code.

    Have a nice day!

    Cheers,
    Ash

    Hello Ash

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. The error was still in place after all plugins were deactivated, default code in htaccess, and the theme switched to twenty nineteen. When I finished the chat session the last item that I was asked for was access to MySQL, so I imagine support will follow up on that front.

The screenshot attached shows the location on my server one of the images references regarding a redirect.

    Hi Brian,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, seems like there was some confusion on how the chat notes were looked upon, extremely sorry about that. However, when I checked your system at the moment, it looks like the issue has been resolved?

I could notice all the images are loading fine in the Media Library for all your subsites.

Could we know what was done to fix the issue? So that it would help other members who encounters such similar issue too.

Please do let us know if there is anything specific we should be looking regarding this issue. Have a nice day ahead.

    Regards,
    Nithin

    Hi Nithin,

Sorry for the delay in clarifying the solution.

In short, when I created the subdomains of the multisite network, they defaulted to http. I use letsencrypt, and force https connections. This is why only the main site in the network had no issues with media files. the media files, while successfully registering on the server for subdomains, showed an error when accessing via the browser due to this configuration. A very basic, simple error; oddly with little to no documentation.

To fix this, I manually updated the site settings for each subdomain to include https, updated wp-config.php to specify home url, and stopped forcing https through letsencrypt, opting to use that setting in cloudflare.

Thank NAME, for their help.
