Trouble with child-theme in Blog-MU reducing header height and padding

Ok, I'm having a really hard time with BlogMu child theme. This is a single site with buddypress 1.6, but I like the style of the theme for buddypress. This is what I did:
1) I copied the folder blogs-mu-child to my wp-content/themes folder.
2) I changed the name of the child-style-sample.css to child-style.css and kept it inside the _inc/css folder it was in wp-content/themes.
3) I edited the child-style.css to include the following lines:

#top-bg {
padding: 0px 0 !important;
#header-name-alt {
padding: 20px !important;
4) I activated the blogMU child theme in my dashboard.

Essentially, I want to reduce the size of the headers in BlogMU -- especially the header-name-alt. I used firebug to locate the correct css code.
What am I doing wrong!!
Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Greetings enioken,

    Thank you for this great question and bringing this significant issue to our attention.

    Lets go ahead and try finding the styling in the original css files of the theme in the parent folder.

    I believe what you are indeed looking for is in the base.css file in which you want to copy the base.css from the parent folder and place it into the child folder in the exact same folder structure as it is in the parent. Adjust as necessary in the child folder.

    Please advise if this works for you.

    Looking forward to hearing form you in any event.

    Cheers, Joe
