Upfront editing the template page

I'd like to start by editing the template page as seen on your web site rather than creating a whole new one from scratch. Once I installed Fixer and click upfront in the top, it opens up your template page but that isn't actually listed in the wordpress dashboard as a page or post. How can I copy it or add it to a wordpress page? or is the theme supposed to only work as it is without creating more pages?

Hey @Adam, hope you're doing well today!

    In address this here:

When you click on the "Upfront" link on the admin bar inside the Dashboard, you'll be taken to the home page by default, that's the page you're seeing at first.

When creating a page on the front end, you'll have the option to choose from a preconfigured page template, or a blank page, as mentioned over in our article here:

    https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/upfront-pages-posts/

So I created a new page, clicked upfront and when I then try to edit the slider in the background settings by adding an image, the pages blurs and nothing happens?

While it sounds like you're trying to edit the home page here, it shouldn't be getting stuck like that... hmm.

I'm not able to reproduce this over on my test site, have you tried doing a conflict test, checking to see if there's a plugin interfering with the editor here?

We've got a handy troubleshooting flowchart at the bottom of our Getting Support page:

    https://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/getting-support/

If that doesn't get things going though, could you please enable Support Access to your site, so that I can have a closer look?

Thanks for your reply, Michael. So, at the beginning, after installation, when i click 'upfront' you say it edits the home page BUT until I have set the home page in settings, how does it know what the home page is? Do I need to create a page and set it as home page BEFORE clicking 'upfront'?

Also, if I create a page, if I zip up the theme and install it on another domain, will that page be the home page? basically, i'd like to create a template like you have done and just upload to my clients' sites and then just make small edits rather than have to re-build that page from scratch for each client's site.

I'm going through the blog tutorials. The PDF manual that comes with the theme is not very helful at all!

    Hey @Adam,

So, at the beginning, after installation, when i click 'upfront' you say it edits the home page BUT until I have set the home page in settings, how does it know what the home page is? Do I need to create a page and set it as home page BEFORE clicking 'upfront'?

    Nope.

So, at the beginning, after installation, when i click 'upfront' you say it edits the home page

    ...it does, if you are:

    (a) on the home page at the time of clicking that "Upfront" button; or,
    (b) you're inside your site's Dashboard

Otherwise, if you're on a different page (e.g. a Contact Us page you've created), and you click that "Upfront" button, you'll be editing that specific page instead.

Also, if I create a page, if I zip up the theme and install it on another domain, will that page be the home page?

Nope, you'd actually end up zipping up the theme itself, the changes made would be stored inside the database. So for this:

basically, i'd like to create a template like you have done and just upload to my clients' sites and then just make small edits rather than have to re-build that page from scratch for each client's site.

You could try one of the suggestions mentioned in response to the 1st question over here (though it would mean that you'd be copying all of the settings, not just a specific template):

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks Michael.
I am still a bit confused:

    1. How does the theme knows what the home page is before I have
created one or does the theme create one? If it does create one, what
is the name of the page because if I later set a page for the blog in
settings > reading, I lose whatever was the theme's home page.

    2. In the same way as when I install a theme it shows the template
page, surely there must be files somewhere that I could change or edit
so that my page would be shown after theme installation instead of the
    current one.

    3. is there information somewhere that shows the different features
between the various upfront themes? or are they just different
    designs.

    Regards,
    Adam

Hey @Adam, my apologies for the delay here!

#1: As my colleague Vinod put it:

The Fixer home page is a post listing virtual blog page and not the actual WordPress page so it doesn't display in the pages section.

You can create a menu item in the header navigational menu of your site called "Home" linking to the home page so that users can navigate to the home page from other pages.

#2: You can find the home page template in here:

    /wp-content/themes/uf-fixer/layouts/archive-home.php

#3: You can check out the features for each theme by going to their respective project pages:

    https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/spirit/
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/scribe/
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/fixer/
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/panino/

I tried yet again to upload the upfront and Fixer. All was fine until I click 'upfront'. The slider images are showing in edit mode but NOT in viewing mode.

Hmm... I'd like to have a closer look at this here, could you please mention the site in question, and enable Support Access to it?

    https://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/wpmu-dev-dashboard-enabling-staff-login/

And is there any way to copy that template page in to a page that I can actually set as a home page in settings?

Right off the bat, the way that comes to mind would be to create a copy of the archive-home template, and edit it (we are working on our Upfront Builder, to make the customizations of page templates easier in the future), as mentioned over here:

    https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/how-to-create-new-page-template-in-any-upfront-theme#post-824418
