Using attachments in messages and wikis

I have been playing with the Communities plugin, for working and exchanging written content this is a powerful tool. Now, I would like to be able to use file attachments in the message boards and wikis. The same functionality would be great if available for the Messaging plugin.

Does anyone know how to solve this using an existing plugin? If this is not possible, I would like to get some guidance on how I could get started developing this functionality as an extension for the plugin if possible.

Thank you!

    Hi Phil,

    Thank you for your tip!

My first posting was of the kind "I don't really know what I want" and your tip offers a quick solution for that. I have been playing more with the "Communities" plugin and what it's missing IMHO is easy access control of and tightly integrated uploads.

What I mean is that files are uploaded directly using a kind of extended version of the "Add New" button in the Media section in wp-admin. What I'm envisioning here is a total conversion or parallel version of the media library as it is currently used in Wordpress. It needs to allow the owner of an upload to set permissions for the upload to be accessible by users invited by the owner and/or by one or more communities he is member of and has shared the file with. Lastly, a "public" flag is a must, too.
I have been looking at Dropbox for this, i.e. linking Dropbox accounts to WP profiles with the Dropbox API managing all the sharing but I'm still not sure this is the right way to go.
