Using widgets on different themes

I have a WPMU install at We're currently implementing a directory theme at (would have used WPMU but it was out of order when we needed it!)

Now - they create a sidebar widget which showcases all the featured listings. I'd like to run that on the homepage at The issue is that is Arthemia and /directory is directorypress.

How can I make a widget from directorypress available to arthemia?

    Greetings iamstaggered,

    Great question!

Have you tried checking the Directory themes widgets and perhaps hijack one to your theme on the other site?

Of course you would want to change the url references in the widgets code to the original site where the theme is hosted so the data will be pulled through.

I do not know for a fact that this will indeed work, but that is what I would try.

In addition, if I could figure out the exact widget, I would take it's code and put it into the text widget on the other site and once again set it's URL references to the original.

There are a couple of ideas that may work.

In a last ditch effort I would contact the maker of the theme to ask them about it.

Thank you for being a WPMU Dev Member!

    Cheers, Joe

    Greetings iamstaggered,

You should be able to find the files for the widget inside a widget folder expected to be a sub folder of the directory plugin.

You would want to identify which widget if there is more then one that is used for showcasing all the featured listings.

Then copy it to the other site which hopefully has a widget folder in its theme as well and pop the widget in there.

Alternatively, if the widget is just one file, I would open it up and grab the coding from the directory site and pop it into the text widget of the primary site and see if it works - but remember any included URL's must be made to address the directory site URL's.

To offer more specific instructions other then the concepts I would need a copy of the DirectoryPress software and whatever it needs to get it working on my test production server so I could dig into it.

    Cheers, Joe
