Videos and images generating correct featured images

Hi.

I would like to have just a single field to use it to post URLs only. Video URLs, IMG URLs and links. I don’t need uploads. Just the good old copy/paste to insert videos and images and links.

The problem is I can make the featured images to be delivered the right way. I have the option to use the first image as the featured one which works fine for image posts but not for videos (the plugin grabs the img from the previous post). I already tried to use another plugin to grab video poster frame’s as the feature (video thumbnails PRO) but I this case I can no longer check the option “use first img as featured”.

How can I have the correct featured images for both video and images URS?

Thank you

    Hello Wagner,

I have the option to use the first image as the featured one which works fine for image posts but not for videos (the plugin grabs the img from the previous post).

I’ve done quick test on my site with video from youtube and featured image was pulled correctly and set up for the post (frame from video). Can you share a link for video that is not working for you?

    kind regards,

    Kasia

    Hi Kasia!

Thank God you’ve answered me – i’m really having a hard time to configure the plugin.

I have the plugin installed on our staging site:

    uod.staging.wpengine.com

    If you need to login:

    STAGING SITE

    // EDITED BY STAFF

Feel free to try it as much as needed – this is not live and we can play freely there.

Please try to insert a youtube URL link using “status” or “link” and you will notice that the post will be published without a featured image (actually it will grab the first image from my media library which is totally unrelated)

(we don’t want to make uploads available to our readers, just copy/paste)

I’m looking forward for your next reply

    thank you!

    Hello Wagner,

Please never post any credentials on forums treads. Those are public threads and everyone can see those. I removed them, but it would be better if you change them. Also please note that posting few times in a row will put your thread lower in queue as we process our threads from older to newer.

Please try to insert a youtube URL link using “status” or “link” and you will notice that the post will be published without a featured image (actually it will grab the first image from my media library which is totally unrelated)

I tested this on my installation and that looks like a bug. I tested more video links quick status posts are grabbing feature image from first status post where I placed video.

So when I tested it first time it grabbed correct video frame for post and next statuses grabbed the same frame.

I’m marking this as bug and letting developer know about issue. I’ll keep you posted about progress on fixing that.

    kind regards,

    Kasia

OK, thank you. I’m really looking forward for a quick bug-fix on this issue since the plugin and subscription is really expensive and it is not fully functional at this time. Support is also taking too long to answer for a premium service. I hope WPMU fix all that asap.

    Thank you.

    Hi Wagner ,

    Apologies for the delay!

I have made a modification to a file and I have it attached here so you can replace it on your installation.

The file is wp-content/plugins/quick-status/lib/class_wdqs_admin_pages.php and you will need to unzip it once you download it.

Please let me know if you have any troubles replacing this file or how it works for you

    Thanks!

    Hi panos!

Thank you for your reply and your help!

I already replaced the file but the plugin is not grabbing the first imported image as featured image (this option is set to “yes”. The image showing up is our generic thumbnail for posts w/o featured image.

Videos are working perfectly – grabbing poster frame as featured image.

You can test it yourself – I can send you a admin login please send me an email wagnerbrenner@gmail.com so I can send it in private.

    Thank you!

I was able to notice the same result, I’m pinging the developer asking to give a look regarding this. Please do note that developers work round the clock with many critical issues, and hence have a slow response time. Either myself, or the developer will keep you posted.

    Thank you Nithin.

Sure, I understand that developers are working hard (I guess we all are) but this is also a critical issue since it is still waiting for a solution almost after a month from the the first time it was first installed. And I don’t think a lack of structure should be offered as as explanation for a slow response time. I believe this is something that WPMU should take care.

Anyway, I don’t mean to be rude, this is just my opinion and I’m sure you guys are doing the best possible. Support is very kind and it is just about the long time for a solution.

Looking forward for an update soon!

    Thank you again Nithin!

    Hi Wagner ,

This change should not affect other featured images imports. Could you please visit admin > Settings > Status and confirm that in your settings you have set the following options at the “Download external images” section (the last four options at the bottom of the page) :

Attempt to download external images? : Yes

Attempt to download external images for links? : Yes

Import downloaded images into Media Library? : Yes

Set first imported image as featured image? : Yes

    Thanks!

Yes, that’s exactly what I have on my settings.

    Here’s a screenshot of my current “Status” settings;

Images are being uploaded and I can see them on media library but for some reason they are not showing up as featured images on our frontpage.

Is there a way to send you a admin login in private so you can take a look?

    Hi Nithin!

    Thanks for your help!

Support Access is enabled and I also sent you a message as oriented.

Once logged you will notice the Status field on our frontpage. Feel free to use it and try to publish both images or videos (I can delete them after you are done, np).

    Hi Wagner,

Thank you for enabling support access, I checked the plugin in my system with a default theme enabled, and now it works fine in my system. I checked your website, and it seems like there is a conflict in the frontend, either it's from the theme, or a plugin. When I added the link through the front end it didn't work, but when I added the same link through Dashboard > Home it worked.

You can notice the same link added through the frontend has a default image, and the one added through the dashboard contains an image of pizza.

I didn't perform a conflict test, since it's a live site, and I could also notice one of your user is working on your site. Could you please run a quick plugin/theme conflict test as illustrated in getting support manual (flowchart), and rule out whether any plugin is causing this issue.

    http://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/using-wpmu-dev/getting-support/

Please let us know how that goes, have a nice day.

    Hummmm, odd.

I tried to publish an image through Dashboard > Home but it did not work. I’m still getting the default img.

    How I am doing it:

I pasted an image URL using the “status” mode (we will not use any upload method so “image” and “video” options were hidden using CSS.

Did you publish the pizza image by uploading it – or pasting a URL?

I will deactivate all plugins anyway to see if I can find a conflict, anyway.

    I’ll get in touch soon.

    Thank you!

  • Wagner
    • Flash Drive

I deactivated all plugins except “status” and the problem was still there.

So I changed the theme to WordPress “Twenty Sixteen” and – voilá – it worked fine.

So I guess it is a THEME CONFLICT.

    What should I do next?

Get in touch with the theme developer and ask for what?

    Thank you!

I can see you have figured this out. I pasted a URL, you can find the post created through the status plugin in the trash.

What should I do next? Get in touch with the theme developer and ask for what?

Yes, it does sound like it’s a theme conflict. Would recommend you to check this with your theme developer in order to get this sorted asap.

    Hi Wagner ,

I would like to have a closer look on this and I would need to connect via ftp. Same way you sent your login info to my colleague Nithin, could you send ftp credentials too in the following manner :

    – FTP credentials

    host

    username

    password

    (and port if required)

also please include a link back to this thread

You can send it as a reply to your previous email discussion or assign it to me by using the following subject “Attn: Panos Lyrakis”.

Of course we would appreciate the opinion of the theme’s developer if possible

    Hi Wagner ,

Thanks! the issue seemed related to js/css, as an element got hidden, perhaps from theme or custom css, and couldn’t be read by js.

I have placed the following css in your admin > Appearance > Customize > Advanced CSS Editor :

    .wdqs-thumbnail-container{
    display: block;
    }

and seems to be fixing this. Could you please check on your side and let us know how it goes?

    Thanks!

    Hi Wagner ,

I don’t think the plugin is supposed to retrieve a raw image url (not talking about the <img> tag here) from the content.

However I did a custom change where it checks if there is no thumbnail set, it will check if the content is a valid image and set that as a featured image. That means that if there is any other character except of the image url it won’t work.

I gave it a try and seem to be working on my side. Please give ti shot and let me know how it goes

    Thanks!

    Hi Panos!

Yes, if I publish just an image it goes well but if I add a text to go along, it doesn’t.

But it’s Ok, we already improved from the original scenario.

Please allow me to share a quick opinion:

Our idea was to use “Status” as a frontend tool to publish posts as we do on Facebook – with just a single box and pasting whatever kind of link there. I understand that’s is not the purpose of the plugin but I would definitely recommend that WPMU re-evaluate this and position this plugin as the fastest alternative to publish a post on WordPress. We think it could be a HUGE success. Everyday thousands of authors are giving up wordpress because it is so much easier to publish on social networks where you don’t have to go after images with the correct sizes and formats, deal with downloads and uploads, feature images and so on. If this plugin was mine I would try to make it read any kind of link that would go inside the box + a highlight on words to change formats and insert links. It would be simply the best plugin ever  In fact I believe this is something that WordPress should try to implement on their own platform before it’s too late.

Anyway I would like to thank you very much for your time and your great support on this issue it was really helpfull.

    Cheers!

Thank you for your valuable feedback – this would be indeed nice feature to have. Usually I would move that thread to Features and Feedback section of the forum, but I’m afraid your proposal could be easily missed by members – as this is long thread.

If you want you can create separate thread with your idea for Status plugin in Features and FeedBack so more members could like it – more +1 then it is more possible that it will be implemented into plugin.

    kind regards,

    Hi Wagner ,

It sounds like a cool request!

Therefor I added another modification which should

1st: Check if has a thumbnail (from link)

2nd: If thumbnail empty, check if contains nothing else than an image url

3rd: If thumbnail still empty, check if content contains the <img> tag and gets the first one

Hope that’s what you were looking for

Please keep in mind to post your request as Kasia explained above so it can get included in a future version, as my fix doesn’t offer any setting options and can’t be included as it is.

    Thanks!
