Weird DNS on my site...

Hi !

So Defender sent me a report (listed below) for one of our sites. The DNS it mentions (artisanpainter.com) is not ours, and I have no idea why it's there. We have zero connection to that website either listed anywhere. Can you please help me understand what's happening here and how to resolve and avoid it in future?

Our systems have detected that your site - https://magnetz.co.za/ - went down on May 30, 2018 7:17pm and is returning "Error: Hostname/IP doesn't match certificate's altnames: "Host: magnetz.co.za. is not in the cert's altnames: DNS:artisanpainter.com, DNS:artisanpainter.co.uk, DNS:mail.artisanpainter.co.uk, DNS:mail.artisanpainter.com, DNS:www.artisanpainter.co.uk, DNS:www.artisanpainter.com"."

    Hello OrangeDigital

I hope you are well today.

I checked with our Dev on this project and he stated that Defender does not send such notification emails. So, I'm a bit confused about this one. Are you referring to our Uptime service?

In any case, what it looks like happened was there was a DNS issue at either your Domain registrar or Hosting provider where the DNS for your domain was not properly mapped to the correct IP address. In this case, it's quite possible that you would see a SSL mismatch because EV based SSL certificates go by IP address rather than domain name and the other domain (artisanpainter.com).

Is this a recurring issue or a one-time event?

If this happens again, please visit the following link and see if all the A Records for your domain point to the same IP address: https://www.whatsmydns.net/#A/magnetz.co.za

If they do not, then there's an issue with your host or registrar. If all the listed IPs are the same, then there's something in the software we need to investigate.

    Best regards,

    James Morris
