WHY AN OUTDATED DATABASE FOR HOSTING ?

i posted the following already in "Features & feedback" forum but posting again here to see if others watching the "hosting" forums may agree.

looking at the "system info" in the wpmudev dashboard plugin,

it shows the following ;

Server Version 5.5.5-10.1.37-MariaDB-1~bionic

it seems to me this is MariaDB 10.1 based off MySQL 5.5 ?

is this indeed what is used ?

if so, why such an outdated database ?

i am no server admin/expert but its common knowledge that mysql 5.7 is much faster than anything before it.

and even 8.0.13 is also out.

MariaDB has their 10.2 and 10.3 versions as well.

again am i correct in identifying this correctly ?

it is often stated how important database performance affects WP sites so why not hit the ground running with a new up to date DB ?

suggestion ;

if wpmudev is using DO servers/infrastructure,

why not use the exact version DB as their upcoming managed DB ?

https://try.digitalocean.com/dbaas-beta/

so that anytime in the future if wpmudev decides to offer more powerful plans, a managed DB could be a great option and easier to transfer with same type of DB ?

    Hello amused

    I hope you’re having a nice day!

    I’ve consulted it with our sys-admin and if it comes to the Maria DB version currently used, the reason for this is that MariaDB 10.1.37 (released on 2018/11/02) is the latest stable release of the 10.1 branch with features from MySQL 5.6 and 5.7.

    It’s officially maintained until 2020/10/17. While it is an earlier version than then current 10.3, it is still supported, it’s widely used (so more common) and better tested. This is similar to the case with not updating to PHP 7.3 yet everywhere even though it’s the latest.

    However, please also note that while we’re still in “beta” stage with hosting, not everything’s “set in stone”. Our devops/sys-admins are running extensive tests and checks of various configuration aspects and some important updates are going to take place based on these tests for sure.

    Best regards,

    Adam
