Wild Card SSL & Mapped Domain Names

I'm in the process of buying a Wild Card SSL certificate that supports 1 domain and unlimited sub-domains for my multisite network.

What I want to know is; will the sub-domains covered by the Wild Card SSL certificate also work with domain names mapped to them?

Mapped domain:
https://newsite1.com (Will using https also work on the mapped domain or will it cause browser warnings?)

    Hello Glenton,

I hope you're well today and thank you for your question!

Mapped domains would work with that setup however:

    - if you set mapped domains to use "http" protocol, it should be fine but browser will not treat the site as secure "as whole"

    - if you set mapped domains to use "https" protocol, it will cause security warnings in browser.

That is because the wild-card certificate doesn't cover these domains. There are two alternative solutions for this:

    1. a Multi-Domain SSL certificate
    2. your current cert + multiple single domain certificates

    As for 1)

This is the solution that would work "everywhere". The downside is that such certs are usually much more expensive and also require you to specify domains to be covered "upfront"; then when you add a new domain you need to re-issue certificate and update it on your server.

    As for 2)

That is a very simple to implement and use solution where you wild-card certificate covers the main domain and all of its sub-domains "out of the box" and then while you are adding new top level domains (mapped domains) you just install a simple single-domain certificate for that domain in addition.

That is however something that is supported buy more and more hosts but still not by each and every provider. Therefore I would suggest getting in touch with your host and asking them if they support installation of multiple SSL certificates on the same hosting account. If they do, I think that would be the best way to go.

If you have additional questions, let me know please.
