WP Defender throwing database errors

I'm getting errors like this in my WP error logs:
WordPress database error Got a packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes for query INSERT INTO wp_sitemeta (site_id,meta_key,meta_value) VALUES (1, 'wdfcontent', 's:1562632:\"a:12657:{i:0;s:40:\"/var/www/html/wp-content/cache/blogs.php\"...."

That ... represents a very large dump of serialized text that Defender is trying to save to the database. I'm not sure if it's related, but right now I'm also troubleshooting media uploads occasionally failing with the nondescript "HTTP Error."

Can you advise as to what Defender is trying to save to the database in this long string? It looks like a large list of file paths, but I'm not sure why it's so long that your code is running into the limits of the max_allowed_packet size.
