WP first site

Hi guys!

I'm a newish to all of this, kind of a dumb question here - Do I need to have a WP site already set up before working with wpmudev/Upfront?

I'm trying to keep costs down and would like to simply do the basic free WP instead of upgrading at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to provide.

    Hello Keith,

I hope you're well today and thank you for your question!

All our plugins and themes are for WordPress so in order to use them you would need a WordPress based site. I'm not sure though whether we're on the same side here.

As you mentioned that you'd like to keep "free WP" instead of upgrading at the moment, I think you may be referring to the site you already have at wordpress.com platform. Is that correct?

The wordpress.com is a blogging platform based on WordPress software but it's a separate commercial company and our plugins/themes won't work there. We are not able to provide you with support for the site you got there. WordPress.com company has its own dedicated support team and you'll find their support forum here:

That being said, in order to use WordPress with our plugins/themes or to make use of our support you will want to switch to "self hosted WordPress" site. That means running WordPress (see: wordpress.org) on your own server (hosting account) with your own domain.

I think you may find this article on our blog useful:

It explains the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com and outlines some pros and cons of both to help you make a choice.

If you have further questions on this, let me know please!
